About
SpiritRecover is a tool for all of the early Spirit jailbreakers who lost there photos during the jailbreak process. Using the backup data that iTunes keeps on your computer, SpiritRecover locates the relevant image data and exports it to a temporary folder. You can then move the files to a folder of your choosing.
This is a very lightweight program. It does what it needs to do—nothing more, nothing less. It exists simply because I don't believe in capitalizing off widespread bugs and problems in software; it kill me to see people making $25+ selling programs to fix something that shouldn't need fixing in the first place. (Then again, we can argue that Apple shouldn't prohibit jailbreaking in the first place, but that's a debate for another time.)
This will not work as a substitute for programs that extract files of your choosing from the backup data. Why? I'm a programmer, too, and I know how hard it is to freelance. I don't intend to take money away from those who spent the time and effort to develop a top-notch program to read the recovery data. Maybe someday I'll release my own version of such a program, but I'll likely charge for its use to prevent unfair competition.
Instructions
- Do yourself a favor and get some sort of anti-malware program. That way, when your computer crashes tomorrow, I won't be stuck helping you fix your computer via e-mail so I don't get blamed for spreading viruses. (As much as I'd rather be doing that than working on homework, it gets old after a while.) Avira is my favorite free suite, but Norton is my overall favorite.
- Visit the download page.
- Click "Run."
- Run the executable rather than saving it. As I said, this is a lightweight program that you'll probably only use once; as such, the program will not install itself. Instead, it will install any necessary frameworks (.NET 4.0, etc.), then launch the program. You'll be able to run it repeatedly without much trouble via this website, if you like; just don't expect a nice link in your Start menu.
- You'll be presented with a nice, simple dialog. There's only one control for you to interact with: the backup selector. Choose the backup you'd like to use.
- SpiritRecover will do its magic, and a temporary folder will open. Browse through the images and pick the ones you like. Be sure to move them to a safe place, as all the files in the temporary recovered folder will be removed next time you run Disk Cleanup unless you move them.
- That's it! Aren't you glad you didn't spend $25 when it could be this simple?
